Our Mission
The Breastfeeding Outreach for Greater Washington is a non-profit organization founded
to provide:

- A comprehensive lactation education and support program for women, their partners and other significant family members.
- Skilled technical management of lactation related problems.
- Hands-on assistance and instruction in use of breastpumps and breastfeeding supplies.
Our goal is to increase breastfeeding satisfaction and duration for expectant parents and families.
Our Qualifications
The International Board Certified Lactation Consultant
(IBCLC) is a specialist in lactation
management. The IBCLC credential is widely recognized as the gold standard in breastfeeding
expertise. Our IBCLCs also hold graduate degrees in related health care fields, and have
several years of experience in breastfeeding assistance and are skilled in the technical management of
lactation-related problems. With a focus on preventative health care, we use a problem solving
approach to provide appropriate information, recommendations and referrals. We value your
input and involve you in the decision-making process.
Pat Shelly – Director
Pat Shelly is the founder and Director of The Breastfeeding Center for Greater
Washington in Northwest DC. She received her BSN from DePaul University and graduate
degree in Health Care Management from Webster University. A Registered Nurse, Certified Infant
Massage Instructor, ASPO Certified Lamaze Instructor and International Board Certified
Lactation Consultant, Pat has over 25 years experience in women and children's
health. Her diverse background includes work in military hospitals, Inova Alexandria Hospital,
Columbia Hospital for Women, corporate and community outreach, home visits, and private practice. Known in the community as "The Breast Whisperer" and "The Marry Poppins of Breastfeeding," she has been referenced in the local and international media, including the Washington Post and Fox News Channel. Pat resides in Northern Virginia with her loving husband, and her two breastfed sons are always nearby in heart and mind.

Philosophy
The Breastfeeding Center for Greater Washington believes it is the right of every family
to receive consistent information and positive support for breastfeeding and lactation. The
Breastfeeding Center for Greater Washington respects these rights regardless of age, race,
religion, ability, sexual orientation and economic or social status.
