The International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) who will meet with you is a specialist in lactation management. The IBCLC credential is widely recognized as the gold standard in breastfeeding expertise. The IBCLC's at The Breastfeeding Center for Greater Washington have qualified long term experience in breastfeeding assistance and are skilled in technical management of lactation-related problems. With a focus on preventative health care, we use a problem solving approach to provide appropriate information, recommendations and referrals. Lactation Consultations
A consultation usually takes one to two hours and includes:
- an examination of the baby and his mouth and tongue movements
- an examination of the mother and her breasts
- an observation of a complete breastfeeding session
- teaching you specialized techniques for feeding (some require special equipment or breast pumps)
- written recommendations for resolution of the problem
- written report sent to your physician
Home Visits
Our experienced consultant can visit you in your home for a thorough assessment and evaluation of Mom, the baby and the breastfeeding situation. Our accurate baby scales are used to follow infant weight, especially important during the early days, or when there is question about milk supply or infant development.
Telephone Advice
A Lactation Consultant can provide support and problem solving through a telephone consultation. If the issues cannot be solved by phone, a follow-up consultation can be scheduled in your home or our office.

NEW! GRANDPARENTS LETTER

Missed Appointments
When you book an appointment with us, that time is set aside for you. We ask that you keep your appointment and arrive on time.
If you do not show up for your scheduled appointment, and you have not notified us at least 24 hours in advance, you will be required to pay the full cost of the treatment as booked.
